Resumen de EL RANCHO MELING. IMÁGENES DE UN PASADO Y UNA CULTURA EN BAJA CALIFORNIA

  El Rancho Meling es un interesante destino ecoturístico en Baja California, México, localizado en el camino hacia el Parque Nacional San Pedro Mártir, este rancho recibe visitantes de todo el mundo que vienen en la búsqueda de un lugar tranquilo cuyo entorno físico va de las zonas de chaparral al bosque de coníferas. La relevancia de este rancho, sin embargo, va más allá de su belleza o relevancia turística, y tiene que ver con el hecho de ser un escena- rio en donde han tenido lugar diversas tramas vinculadas a diferentes etapas formativas de lo que ahora es el estado de Baja California. De ser el hábitat tradicional de los indios kiliwas, el ahora Rancho Meling llegó a ser un ícono del proyecto temprano de los inmigrantes europeos en el paso del siglo XIX al XX. De ser objeto de los ataques de los revolucionarios mago- nistas, este lugar se transformó en expresión emblemática de la globaliza- ción y los procesos transnacionales. Más aún, teniendo un origen decimonónico vinculado a actividades esencialmente masculinas propias de la cultura del vaquero, los actores principales en este lugar han sido mujeres. El presente artículo hace un recuento de la historia de este rancho.

  The Meling Ranch is an interesting eco-tourist destination in Baja Califor- nia, located in the path towards the National Park of San Pedro Martir. Along the year, this ranch is visited by thousands of people from all over the world looking for a peaceful place plenty of bushes and pines. However, the relevance of this site, besides the tourist aspect, has to do with the fact of being an important scenario of different historical episodes of Baja Califor- nia. From being the traditional habitat of the Kiliwa Indians, the Meling Ranch became an icon of the early settlements of the European immigrants between the 19th and 20th Centuries. From being destroyed by the revolu- tionary Magonistas, this place was re-founded and transformed into an em- blematic expression of globalization and transnational processes. Moreover, in spite of the fact this was a 19th Century ranch where flourished the mas- culine oriented cattle culture, the main actors along the history of this site have been women. This paper goes through the history of this ranch.
