    Starting from an analysis of a series of photographs taken in the Royal Navy ex- peditions to the Pacific in the nineteenth century, this essay examines the theatrical and performative aspects of photography, suggesting that it can be used as a heuris- tic device in historiographical exploration.

    The author points that the photographical frame has a “heightening effect” that forc- es images into visibility while creating points of fracture that forces a concentra- tion of semiotic energy in the edge of the photograph, making the viewer conscious of what lies beyond the image, allowing thus a confrontation of the generalizing historical narratives. The framing also in- tensifies the tensions contained in the very act of making photography, and allows, through the performance of the bodies in- side the image, a confrontation of the his- torical narrative imposed on them (a colo- nial narrative, in this case).

    Partindo da análise de uma série de fotografias tiradas em expedições da Marinha britânica no Pacífico no final do século XIX, este texto interroga os aspectos teatrais e performativos da fotografia, propondo utilizá-la como um dispositivo heurístico na explora- ção historiográfica. Parte-se do pres- suposto de que o quadro fotográfico possui um “efeito elevante” que força as imagens à visibilidade ao mesmo tempo em que cria pontos de fratura que concentram energia semiótica nas bordas da fotografia e tornam o espec- tador consciente do que está para além da imagem, permitindo, assim, con- frontar narrativas históricas generali- zantes. O enquadramento também in- tensifica tensões contidas no próprio ato do fazer fotográfico e permite, pela performance dos corpos dentro da ima- gem, uma confrontação da narrativa histórica imposta sobre eles (no caso das imagens analisadas, uma narrativa colonial).
