Resumen de Paleomagnetic Results from Upper Cretaceous Ophiolite Rocks in SE Anatolia

  Dos cinturones ofiolíticos con orientación E-O afloran en el SE de Turquía. Las ofiolitas localizadas al sur (Hatay, Koçali) se emplazaron en la Plataforma Arábiga en el Cretácico terminal, mientras que las situadas al norte (Göksun, ˙Ispendere, Kömürhan, Guleman) se emplazaron por debajo del margen S Tauride (i.e. Malatya-Keban Platform) en el Cretácico terminal. Existen diferentes modelos tectónicos en la literatura que explican el origen de estos cinturones ofiolíticos, que se han muestreado para un detallado estudio paleomagnético: a) todas las ofiolitas en Turquía , incluyendo las de este estudio, tienen su origen en una única Cuenca oceánica situada al N (i.e. el N de la Cuenca Oceánica del Neotethys); b) todas las ofiolitas en el SE de Turquía derivan de la Cuenca Oceánica S del Neotethys; c) los dos cinturones ofiolíticos en el SE de Turquía proceden de dos cuencas oceánicas diferentes, el océano Berit al norte y el Neotethys S al sur. Nuestro estudio paleomagnético de 16 estaciones diferentes se ha centrado en los gabros y las secuencias extrusivas de la ofiolita de Kömürhan que se sitúan en el norte del cinturón.

  Two E-W trending ophiolite belts crop out in SE Turkey. The southerly located ophiolites (Hatay, Koçali) were emplaced onto the Arabian Platform in Late Cretaceous whereas the northerly located ophiolites (Göksun, Ispendere, Kömürhan, Guleman) were underthrust below the S Tauride margin (i.e. Malatya-Keban Platform) in Late Cretaceous. Different tectonic models exist in the literature for the origin of these different ophiolite belts that we test here by a detailed palaomagnetic study: a) all the ophiolites in Turkey, including those in the study area were rooted in a single ocean basin to the N (i.e. the N Neotethyan Ocean Basin); b) all the ophiolites in SE Turkey were derived from the S Neotethyan Ocean Basin; c) the two ophiolite belts in SE Turkey are believed to have rooted in two different ocean basins; the Berit ocean to the north and the S Neotethys to the S. Our palaeomagnetic study from 16 different sites was focused on the cumulate gabbros and extrusive sequences of the Kömürhan ophiolite which is located in the north of the belt.
