The extravagance of all sorts of oral forms at the turn of the 19th century has not failed to elicit comment. Cabarets, a locus of bohemian life, welcomed exuberant performances often contrasted with the symbolist experiments linked to the Verb. But are they really distinct aesthetic experiences ? This paper focuses on showing how thinking about orality can enable thinking the continuity between these practices. On a pu souligner l’extravagance des manifestations de l’oralité fin de siècle. Les cabarets, haut lieu de la bohème, accueillent des performances exubérantes qu’on oppose souvent au calme concerté des expérimentations symbolistes sur le Verbe. Mais s’agit-il d’expériences esthétiques distinctes ? Cet article s’attache à montrer comment l’oralité permet de penser une continuité entre ces pratiques. Par-delà les divergences et les querelles d’école, l’oralité pourrait être dans la nébuleuse décadente, ce qu’il y a de plus communément partagé
