La reciente apertura de los archivos de Pío XII (2 marzo 2020) nos permite estudiar las relaciones que este Papa tuvo con España y con su Jefe de Estado, el general Franco, desde 1939 hasta 1958. El pre-sente artículo es un primer avance de lo que será una próxima mono-grafía basada en la documentación vaticana y trata, de momento, los siguientes temas sacados del archivo del nuncio Gaetano Cicognani: Pío XII tras el final de la Guerra Civil y de la persecución religiosa en la república; el archivo del nuncio Cicognani; daños de guerra de las diócesis; martirio del obispo Irurita y estado de la diócesis de Barcelona; exilio del cardenal Vidal y Barraquer; exilio y regreso a España del obispo Mateo Múgica; informes del nuncio sobre la situación española desde 1938 hasta 1944; la polémicas relaciones Iglesia-Estado y las dificultades para los nombramientos de obispos; cuestiones políticas, como el “Fuero de los Españoles” y la libertad religiosa; los obispos ante el Referéndum de 1947; intervenciones de Pío XII en favor de los condenados a muerte y detenidos políticos; el nuncio Cicognani y los orígenes del Opus Dei; obispos nombrados en España por Pío XII

The recent opening of the archives of Pius XII (March 2, 2020) allows to study the relationship between the pope and the Head of State, Gene-ral Franco, from 1939 to 1958. This article is a first advance of what It will be a forthcoming monograph based on the Vatican documentation and will deal, for the moment, with the following topics: Pius XII after the end of the Civil War and the religious persecution of the Republic; the archive of the nuncio Cicognani; diocesan war damage; martyr-dom of Bishop Irurita and state of the diocese of Barcelona; exile of Cardinal Vidal y Barraquer; exile and return to Spain of Bishop Mateo Múgica; nuncio reports on the Spanish situation from 1938 to 1944; the controversial Church-State relations and the difficulties for the ap-pointment of bishops; political questions, such as the “Charter of the Spanish” and religious freedom; the bishops before the 1947 Referen-dum; interventions by Pius XII in favor of those sentenced to death and political detainees; the nuncio Cicognani and the origins of Opus Dei; bishops appointed in Spain by Pius XII.
