L’educazione sportiva dell’élites nell’Italia liberale: il ruolo dell’Istituto nazionale per l’incremento dell’educazione fisica (1906-1923)

    The current research focuses on the development of urban elites in Italy at the beginning of the 20th century. Between 1906 and 1923 the National Institute for the Increase of Physical Education aimed at involving the leading groups of Italian cities in the promotion of physical activities by setting up local Committees. Thus, the goal of this study is to evaluate to what extent the Institute founded by jurist Luigi Lucchini contributed to integrate local élites with the system of sport and gymnastics values promoted at national level by State institutions such as school and army. The research extends to the topic of elites’ education the methodology outlined by Camurri (2009). The author argues that researchers should focus on all those processes that contributed to link central and local political institutions in order to point out bilateral influences existing between the 19th and 20th centuries. According to Camurri, a full understanding of Italian political and social history must analyse a variety of central-local relations. This article investigates the role of the National Institute for the Increase of Physical Education as it emerges from the correspondence between its central offices and local Committees and the magazine of the Institute. The letters analysed have been collected in local Archives, whereas the magazine was published between 1907 and 1912. As a provisional conclusion, the article provides evidence of how important further research on the education processes of Italian elites could be, as stated by Gaudio (2018, p. 9).

    Il presente contributo intende soffermarsi sui processi di formazione dell’élites cittadine avvenuti nell’Italia liberale mediante l’azione di uno specifico agente educativo, l’Istituto nazionale per l’incremento dell’educazione fisica, fondato nel 1906 dal giurista Luigi Lucchini. Questo sodalizio, attivo sino al 1923, aveva l’obiettivo di svolgere un’efficacia propaganda a favore dell’educazione fisica, attraverso l’istituzione di Comitati provinciali, sforzandosi di renderla parte dei costumi delle élites urbane. La metodologia qui adoperata seguirà il percorso tracciato da Camurri (Le élites italiane: lo stato degli studi e le prospettive di ricerca, 2009), applicandolo alla dimensione formativa, laddove egli invitava i ricercatori ad approfondire i meccanismi di funzionamento sui quali si basa il rapporto tra centro e periferia del sistema politico, in un’ottica di condizionamento reciproco: «lo studio dei canali di mediazione e delle modalità di integrazione delle élites periferiche al centro della vita politica del paese sono di fondamentale importanza per la storia politica e sociale dell’Italia liberale» (Camurri 2009, 15). Le fonti utilizzate saranno i carteggi intercorsi fra il Comitato centrale dell’Istituto di Lucchini e i Comitati provinciali, conservati presso gli Archivi Storici Comunali, e i numeri del bollettino ufficiale dell’Istituto, stampati fra il 1907 e il 1912. Sulla base di queste considerazioni, il contributo verificherà se l’Istituto di Lucchini abbia integrato o meno le élites locali all’interno di un sistema di valori ginnico-sportivi istituzionalizzato a livello centrale attraverso la scuola e l’esercito. La ricerca contribuirà allo sforzo di elaborare uno specifico soggetto di ricerca storiografica incentrato sull’educazione delle élites italiane (Gaudio 2018, p. 9)
