Este artículo trata las diferencias regionales en capital social y su importancia para el funcionamiento de las instituciones españolas y el desarrollo económico. Se centra en la coherencia que encuentra el capital social con las instituciones liberales y su papel en el desarrollo desigual de las regiones. Actualmente, aquellas regiones con mayor presencia de capital social obtienen un mayor rendimiento económico. Se evalúa la dirección causal y los mecanismos de esta relación desde distintas perspectivas y se demuestra que esta coherencia entre instituciones y capital social tuvo un papel relevante en la trayectoria histórica de la distribución económica regional española.

This article deals with the regional differences in social capital and their importance for the functioning of Spanish institutions and economic development. It focuses on the coherence that social capital finds with liberal institutions and its role in the uneven development of the regions. Currently, those regions with a greater presence of social capital elicit a better economic performance.
The article evaluates from different perspectives the causal direction and the mechanisms of this relationship and shows that this coherence between institutions and social capital had a relevant role in the historical trajectory of the Spanish regional economic distribution
