This paper examines Old Indo-Aryan reflexes of the Proto-Indo-European *-eh1- formation. According to recent studies, the *-eh1-formation, with other derivational members, belongs to the adjectival derivation system (“CALAND system”). The formative (or rather a root-extending element) *eh1 can be added not olny to adjectival roots, serving as the core of the CALAND system, but also to verbal roots (Note that the difference between adjectival roots and verbal roots lies only in semantics). The OIA presents śrāya- ‘become hot/cooked’ (< *ḱl-eh1-e/o-, Lat. caleō) and kṣāya- ‘become burnt’ (< *dhgwh-eh1-e/o-) can be derived from adjectival roots. The root śrā can go back to the combination of the PIE root *ḱel/ḱl and the extending element *eh1 denoting an ingressive meaning i.e. entry of the subject into a state. From the extended root *ḱl-eh1 , the present *ḱl-eh1-e/o- was formed by adding -e/o-, receiving a fientive meaning ‘a state or condition of subject or its change’. The OIA śrāya- has a meaning of changing the condition of subject ‘become hot/cooked’, whereas the Lat. caleō a meaning of continuing state ‘I am warm’.
