Influencia de los abuelos en la socialización familiar de los nietos: revisión de la literatura científica

    Numerosos autores han destacado la recíproca influencia de la relación abuelos-nietos para ambos grupos. En la relación abuelos-nietos es importante tener en cuenta la edad relativa de los abuelos y los nietos en cualquier punto de la relación, ya que la relación cambia con el tiempo. Las relaciones de los nietos pequeños con sus abuelos están mediatizadas por sus padres, es decir, el número de contactos está limitado por los contactos entre los padres y los abuelos; la calidad de su relación está mediada por la calidad de las relaciones previas de sus padres con sus abuelos. Esta conexión es obvia, y aparece por la naturaleza de la dependencia propia de la infancia. Durante la adolescencia esta relación toma una dimensión diferente, debido principalmente a que los jóvenes tienden a centrar su energía personal y relaciones fuera de la familia para, al llegar a la madurez, formar relaciones más duraderas, satisfactorias y voluntarias con los abuelos.

    En el presente artículo se ha realizado un análisis de las publicaciones centradas en la relación abuelos-nietos encontrando que la década de los ochenta ha mostrado un espectacular incremento en la investigación de este tema sobre todo proveniente de Estados Unidos, aunque el número de publicaciones es todavía pequeño, sí consideramos la importancia que constituye el citado tema.

    A number of scholars have underlined the mutual influence of grandparent-grandchild relationships for both of them. It is important in a grandparent-grandchild relationship to take into account the relative age of each partner in any given point of their relationship, since it does change with time. The early relationships between grandparents and their grandchildren are influenced by their parents, since the frequency of their contacts is limited by the number of contacts between grandparents and parents themselves, and the quality of their relationship is mediated by the quality of the previous relationship between parents and grandparents. This fairly obvious connection results from the natural dependence of childhood itself. In adolescence this relationship takes a different shape, mainly due to the fact that youth tend to concentrate their personal energy and their relations far away from the family, in order to create more durable, satisfactory, and voluntary relations with their grandparents once they attain maturity.

    This paper carries out an analysis of the existing literature on the topic of grandparent-grandchildren relationships, and reveals the spectacular growth of research experienced throughout the eighties, specially in the US. However, the existing literature is still underdeveloped, specially if we consider the relevance of the issue.
