    Metals are almost omnipresent in the epic, in the form of arms and weapons, booty, treasure, and as vessels in the hall they dominate the heroic world. Whereas iron and ore play a decisive role as metals of war, gold indicates special value because of its properties and characteristics and its relation to transcendence. Therefore, metals correspond in different ways with the exorbitance of the hero. Especially significant, however, is the ambivalent attitude towards gold both as extraordinary value and incarnation of evil. That this is not only a medieval Christian phenomenon is demonstrated in literature from antiquity: The central and most striking feature of the Golden Age in Ovid’s Metamorphoses, for example, is that there is no such thing as gold and the earth therefore is not destroyed by mining, much as human society is not affected by avarice. It is not only the evaluation of gold that oscillates, but also the evaluation of those who possess and wear it. The poems take advantage of the resul-ting polysemy of gold for a differentiated characterisation of the protagonists. They put into question the relation between the inward nature and the outward appear-ance of a figure, between the claim of value that gold raises and its fulfilment.

    Metalle sind im Heldenepos nahezu allgegenwärtig, sie bestim-men in Form von Waffen und Rüstungen, Beute und Schätzen bis hin zum Tafel-geschirr in der Halle die Welt der Heroen. Während Eisen und Erz vor allem für die Rüstungen, also als Metall des Krieges, eine entscheidende Rolle spielen, markiert das Gold besonderen Wert durch seine spezifischen Eigenschaften und seinen trans-zendenten Bezug. Metalle korrespondieren daher in unterschiedlicher Weise mit der Exorbitanz des Helden. Signifikant ist jedoch die ambivalente Beurteilung des Goldes als höchster Wert und Inbegriff allen Übels zugleich und das nicht erst aus der christ-lichen Sicht des Mittelalters, wie der Blick in die antike Literatur zeigt. Zeichnet sich das ‚Goldene Zeitalter‘ in Ovids Metamorphosen doch erstaunlicherweise dadurch aus, dass es weder Gold kennt noch die Zerstörung der Erde für seine Gewinnung oder die menschlicher Beziehungen durch Habgier. Entsprechend oszilliert nicht nur die Bewertung des Goldes, sondern auch die seiner Träger und Besitzer. Die Epen nutzen die daraus resultierende Polysemie des Goldes, um die Protagonisten in differenzier-ter Weise zu kennzeichnen, indem sie das Verhältnis von Außen und Innen der Figur, von dem sich im Gold manifestierenden Anspruch und dessen Einlösung auf je eigene Weise problematisieren.
