    After a detailed inspection of the three Icelandic sources of the Andvari legend (Snorra Edda, the ‘elder’ Edda, Völsunga saga) I proceed to a study of three Sagas of Icelanders (Gísla saga, Grettis saga, Laxdœla saga) in order to explore the idea of “curse” in the Iceland of the thirteenth century. I discovered that of the three sources of the Nibelung legend in Iceland, only one of them (Snorra Edda) limits the curse to the ring, although the demi-god Loki expands the curse to all of the gold. None of the three sources speak of the curse after it is spoken by Andvari (and repeated by Loki). Several of the sources mention the ring, but none repeats, or even mentions the curse. There are curses in the Sagas of Icelanders. But none of them is called a curse, although their practitioners are called magicians, and the business of cursing seems to be associated with the pagan past. Curses seem to play a larger role in the nine-teenth century picture of the Middle Ages than in the actuality of the period.

    Zunächst werden die drei isländischen Quellen für die Legende von Andvari, die Snorra Edda, die ÄltereEdda und die Völsunga saga, einer detaillier-ten Betrachtung unterzogen. Im Anschluss wird das Konzept des Fluchs für das 13. Jhd. anhand von drei Isländersagas (Gísla saga, Grettis saga, Laxdœla saga) analysiert. Im Zuge dieser Analyse konnte ich feststellen, dass von den drei Quellen des Nibelungen-stoffes auf Island nur die Snorra Edda den Fluch einzig auf den Ring bezieht, obwohl der Halbgott Loki ihn auf das gesamte Gold erweitert hatte. Keine der drei Quellen spricht von einem Fluch, nachdem dieser von Andvari ausgesprochen (und von Loki wiederholt) worden ist. Einige von ihnen erwähnen den Ring, aber keine wiederholt den Fluch oder erwähnt ihn auch nur beiläufig. In den Isländersagas treten Flüche durchaus auf, allerdings werden sie nie als solche bezeichnet; die Ausführenden werden Magier genannt und die Praxis mit der heidnischen Vergangenheit assoziiert. Flüche scheinen mithin im Bild des 19. Jahrhunderts über das Mittelalter eine wesent-lich größere Rolle gespielt zu haben als in der tatsächlichen Periode.
