  Dieser Artikel unternimmt den Versuch, das rätselhafte Kapitel der Egils saga Skalla-Grímssonar, in dem Egil von dem jüngeren Skalden Einar Hel-gason mit dem Beinamen ‚skálaglamm‘ oder ‚Schalenglanz‘ einen Schild geschenkt bekommt. Einar und sein Schild finden in einer Reihe Sagas Erwähnung, die alle früher zu datieren scheinen als die Egils saga. Die Geschichte des Schildes, wie sie in der Saga erzählt wird, kann auf der einen Seite ein subtiles, interetextuelles Anspie-len auf die Geschichte des Einar skálaglamm sein, auf der anderen Seite aber auch ein Kommentar zur Saga selbst. Auch dem Thema der ‚Konversion‘ wird Beachtung geschenkt, und zwar nicht nur im religiösen Sinne, sondern auch in Bezug auf die Umwandlung von Kostbarkeiten. Der Mythos von der Entstehung der Dichtkunst wird als Matrix für eine ‚Poesie der Konversion‘ diskutiert, die in der Egils saga und anderen Werken im Umfeld Snorri Sturlusons greifbar wird.

  In this paper, an attempt is made to elucidate the enigmatic chapter in Egils saga Skalla-Grímssonar, where Egil receives the gift of a shield from a younger skald, Einar Helgason, who bears the nickname ‘skálaglamm’ or ‘bowl-tinkle’. Einar and his shield are mentioned in several sagas which all seem earlier than Egils saga. It will be argued that the story of the shield as it is told in the saga is on the one hand a subtle intertextual play with the story of Einar skálaglamm and on the other a commentary on the saga itself. Building on this, attention will be drawn to the theme of ‘conver-sion’ in the saga, not only religious, but also of the conversion of valuables from one form into another. The myth of the origin of poetry will be discussed as the matrix for this ‘poetics of conversion’ which is discernible in Egils saga and other works associ-ated with Snorri Sturluson.
