Mito constituye una espectacular singularidad en el teatro de Buero y, al tiempo, desde una óptica de cierto experimentalismo, conforma la plétora y el epítome de su producción dramática. Nunca se representó este libreto teatral para una ópera publicado en 1968 en Primer Acto (por lo tanto, antes que El sueño de la razón (1970), Llegada de los dioses (1971), La Fundación (1974), o de las que vendrán después), que aguza la tensión hasta el paroxismo al habitar entre la intertextualidad y la recreación (especialmente cervantinas), la narración y el teatro, el verso y la prosa, la tradición y la vanguardia, lo individual y lo universal, lo real y lo imaginario, el musical y la técnica de inmersión sustanciada en sus últimas obras teatrales, en las que la preeminencia de la subjetividad de los personajes impregna la visión del autor y, por ende, del espectador.
