    El objetivo del presente artículo es establecer los comienzos de lo que después se transformó en la disputa entre hispanista e indigenistas (hispanófilos e hispanófobos) respecto a la interpretación de la Conquista de América. En él se muestra como el conflicto comienza en la segunda década del siglo XVI. La Española experimenta la vorágine conquistadora (captura de indios para hacerlos esclavos), pero la confusión entre indios infieles o paganos comenzaba a disiparse. Esto implicaba usar distintos métodos de cristianización. Desde entonces se formaron dos bandos que lucharon para hacer valer sus posiciones e interpretación, que son los antecesores de la citada disputa.

    The objective of this article is to establish the beginnings of what was later transformed into the dispute between Hispanists and indigenistas (Hispanophiles and Hispanophobes) regarding the interpretation of the Conquest of America. It shows how the conflict begins in the second decade of the sixteenth century.

    Hispaniola experiences the conquering vortex (capture of Indians to make slaves), but the confusion among the unfaithful or pagan Indians began to dissipate. This involves using different methods of Christianization.

    From there they formed two bands that fought to assert their positions and interpretation, that are the predecessors of the initial dispute.
