  • Based on case studies of heroes and their swords in the heroic epics, this article proposes the agency of things as an analytical concept that helps one gain insight into how the action is modeled as an interplay between human beings and things. In addition, an in-depth examination of the textual differences between the Old French and Middle High German versions reveals that considerable attention has also been given, not only to the question of how a sword should be addressed, but also which sword should be used at all.
