    El arriero de Salvatierra pertenece al tipo de los que Uriol denomina muleros-agricultores por dedicarse unos meses del año a la venta ambulante de piezas y otros a la actividad agrícola o ganadera. En el caso de Salvatierra, el mulo es sustituido por el burro por su docilidad, prefiriéndose el animal más bajo, de raza africana, fuerte y resistente para soportar largas y agotadoras jornadas en entornos urbanos al de mayor alzada de origen andaluz o catalán que eran utilizados para monta, viaje o tiro. Junto a sus burros, los arrieros de Salvatierra organizados en compañías, protagonizaron una verdadera epopeya, recorrieron las principales ciudades de España, Europa y ultramar desde finales del siglo XIX y pregonaron su mercancía hasta que, en la década de los 70 del siglo pasado, se desplazaron a las zonas costeras donde el turismo constituía en su principal clientela. El burro, primorosamente enjaezado con atalajes y cabezales vistosos y coloridos, se convirtió en un atractivo para los hipotéticos compradores pero, al tiempo, las legislaciones proteccionistas de los anímales, acarrearon o estos intrépidos arrieros graves conflictos con las autoridades municipales

    The muleteer of Salvatierra belongs to the type that Uriol calls muleteer-farmers to dedicate a few months of the year to the selling of pieces and others to agricultural or livestock activity. In the case of Salvatierra, the mule is substituted by the donkey for its docility, preferring the lowest animal, African breed, strong and resistant to endure long and exhausting days in urban environments to the highest rise of Andalusian or Catalan origin that were used for riding, traveling or pulling. Together with their donkeys, the muleteers of Salvatierra organized in companies, they staged a true epic, toured the main cities of Spain, Europe and overseas since the end of the 19th century and preached their merchandise until, in the decade of the 70’s, they moved to the coastal areas where tourism was their main clientele. The donkey, exquisitely harnessed with eye-catching and colorful headdresses, became an attraction for the hypothetical shoppers, but at the same time, the protectionist laws of the animals, or these intrepid carriers brought with them serious conflicts with the municipal authorities
