    En la Española se establecieron los primeros asentamientos europeos en el Nuevo Mundo entre ellos la ciudad de Santo Domingo en 1498, convirtiéndose en la más importante de las Indias y con la mayor población residente de españoles. En 1509 llegó el virrey Diego Colón quien construyó su palacio en el límite norte de la ciudad. Muy cerca de allí, en un terreno sin urbanizar, se instalaron los cuarteles de su tropa, contiguo al lugar donde pernoctaban los caleros y otros constructores cuando trabajaban en las canteras. Allí se formó un barrio que se llamó Santa Bárbara en honor a la patrona de artilleros y canteros. Por su informalidad, falta de documentación y ser un lugar de habitantes pobres, el barrio ha sido poco estudiado. Por esta razón, el objetivo de este trabajo es analizar el origen, desarrollo y evolución del barrio, para lo cual se consultaron fuentes primarias y archivos que ayudaron a entender el primer asentamiento informal en Indias.

    The first European settlements in the New World were established in Hispaniola, among them the city of Santo Domingo in 1498, becoming the most important of the Indies and with the largest resident population of Spaniards. In 1509, Viceroy Diego Colón arrived and built his palace on the northern limit of the city. Nearby, in an undeveloped area, the headquarters of his troops were installed, next to the place where the lime workers and other constructors spent the night when they worked in the quarries. There, a neighborhood was formed that was named Santa Bárbara in honor of the patron saint of artillerymen and stonemasons. Because of its informality, lack of documentation and being a place of poor inhabitants, the neighborhood has been poorly studied. For this reason, the objective of this work is to analyze the origin, development, and evolution of the neighborhood, for which primary sources and archives were consulted that helped to understand the first informal settlement in the Indies.
