    Tras casi quince años de funcionamiento, Google Earth se ha convertido en una herramienta de gran utilidad para la investigación y enseñanza de las ciencias sociales y naturales. La geografía, que tiene la superficie terrestre como principal objeto de estudio, no ha permanecido al margen de este fenómeno, y cada vez es mayor el número de geógrafos que utilizan esta tecnología. En este trabajo se examinan las grandes tipologías arquitectónicas de los establecimientos de asistencia sanitaria construidos en la Antigüedad y la Edad Media, mientras que en un artículo posterior (Ar#64;cne, nº 123, 1 de agosto de 2009) se estudiarán los principales modelos edificatorios a partir del Renacimiento. En ambos casos el tema se aborda empleando imágenes de satélite extraídas de la versión gratuita de Google Earth, que se complementan con cartografía histórica y otros materiales gráficos. Además, proponemos una nueva herramienta para la docencia en diferentes niveles educativos: un viaje virtual a través de tres mil años de arquitectura hospitalaria.

    After almost fifteen years of functioning, Google Earth has become a tool of great utility for the research and teaching of social and natural sciences. Geography, which has terrestrial surface as its main object of study, has not remained outside the margins of this phenomenon, and the number of geographers who use this technology is increasing. In this work we examine the big architectural typologies of the establishments of sanitary assistance constructed in Ancient times and the Middle Ages, whilst in a later article (Ar#64;cne, nº 123, 1st August 2009) the main models of buildings from the Renaissance will be studied. In both cases, the subject matter is approached by using satellite images extracted from Google Earth's free version, which are complemented with ancient cartography and other graphics. In addition, we propose a new tool for teaching in different educational levels: a virtual trip across three thousand years of hospital architecture.
