    La obra y el pensamiento de Aby Warburg (1866-1929) es en la actualidad motivo de grandes discusiones historiográficas. Sus breves artículos, su proyecto inconcluso Atlas Mnemosyne y sus diarios reflejan ideas, tanto sobre la supervivencia (Nachleben) de la Antigüedad en el Renacimiento como acerca de cuestiones relativas a la historia del arte en general. En este trabajo se presenta una de las ideas que el historiador alemán desarrolló durante toda su vida: la noción de grisalla. Esta técnica pictórica suponía para Warburg un estado de tensión visual en el primer Renacimiento y fue la de su célebre concepto de Pathosformel. Este concepto es operativo para explicar algunas características del funcionamiento del Atlas, como forma de relacionar imágenes. Los vaivenes y el desarrollo de esta noción constituyen el eje del presente artículo

    The work and thought of Aby Warburg (1866-1929) is the subject of great historiographical discussions today. His short articles, his unfinished project Atlas Mnemosyne and his journals present great ideas about the survival (Nachleben) of the Antiquity in the Renaissance and interesting theories about the history of art in general. This work focuses on presenting one of the ideas that the German historian developed throughout his life: the notion of Grisaille. This pictorial technique assumed for Warburg a state of visual tension in the first Renaissance and was its celebrated concept Pathosformel. This concept can be used to explain some characteristics of the operation of the Atlas as a way to relate images to each other. The ups and downs of this notion comprise the central point of this article.
