Resumen de Gateways to Adventure Tourism: the Economic Impacts of Mountaineering on One Portal Community

Alan W. Ewert

  • Tourism activities that contain elements of risk and danger, such as white-water boating, wilderness backpacking, and mountaineering, are often underrated in the economic contributions they make to specific localities. This article describes a recent study conducted with high-altitude mountaineering at Mt. McKinley in Denali National Park, AL. Results from this study suggest that expenditures for equipment, air travel, food, guide services, and transportation are substantial. Not surprisingly, when disaggregated by country of residence, significant differences were observed in all the variables previously mentioned, suggesting that adventure tourism can make a positive and significant economic impact to local communities, particularly if specific desirable geographical attributes are present.
