Carlos Real de Azúa (1916-1977) fue un intelectual uruguayo heterogéneo: escritor, ensayista, historiador y crítico literario. Se adhirió muy joven a las débiles formaciones falangistas de los años treinta en Uruguay y viajó a España en el invierno de 1942, cuando el régimen de Franco parecía afirmarse en medio de la represión y la miseria. Sobre su desencanto con la España imaginada y, más afirmativamente, sobre el futuro posible de la democracia postotalitaria en Occidente escribió más tarde un libro que es su experiencia de viaje, hecha de rectificaciones y ratificaciones de fuerte significación.

Carlos Real de Azúa (1916-1977) was a Uruguayan intellectual with many labels: writer, essayist, historian and literary critic. At a young age, he adhered to the relatively weak Falangist formations of the thirties in Uruguay. In the winter of 1942, he travelled to Spain just as the Franco regime was growing strong in the midst of repression and misery. There, he became disenchanted with the Spain he had imagined. In a more positive light, he began to imagine the future of a possible post-totalitarian democracy in the West. He later wrote a book about his travels, which was filled with significant rectifications and ratifications.
