Because of the absence of a periodontal ligament osseointegrated implants are unable to adapt their position to an eventual misfit of a rigid framework. The distortion or imprecision of a prosthetic structure can neven be obtained from an imprecise working model. We present and alternative to the direct splinted method of impressions based on the construction of a splint which substitutes the traditional acrylic material by clinically undeformable metallic connectors. Before the taking of impressions it will be possiible to test the exactness of the splint and verify that the divergence between the implants does not exceed that which is allowed by the abutment system being used. The splint maintains the implants in position during the stone setting and, using alginate as the impression material, may be recuperated from the tray in order to check the exactitude of the model with respect to the clinical situation. The splint may also be used as a base for jaw records. All this reduces costs, lab and clinic time, and reduces the likelihood of making mistakes when constructing the working model.
