  • Resumen
    • The railway systems of neutral countries during First World War also felt the effects of the conflict, and the Spanish economy was among those severely impacted by the war, although there were sectors that benefitted from the opportunities which would not have otherwise existed in times of peace. These opportunities included the chance to do business and engage in exports. In contrast, other sectors were negatively affected by the conflict, which had a major impact on passenger and goods transport and affected the cost structure of railway companies. During the years of the Great War, as in other countries, whether neutral or not, inflation was running rife, which put even greater pressure on running costs. In Spain, railway companies were subject to strong regulation, and the lack of any flexibility to adapt prices to the dramatic conditions triggered by the war only served to heighten their production and institutional crisis.
