El 1 de octubre de 1777 se firmó el tratado de San Ildefonso, y con ello comenzó para España un nuevo capítulo de su historia naval. En el acuerdo, Portugal cedió las islas de Fernando Poo, Annobón y ambos Elobeyes, así como el litoral entre las desembocaduras de los ríos Níger y Ogooué.
El interés geoestratégico de aquel enclave, que permitía un asentamiento en el sector oriental del Atlántico sur con un centro operativo en el virreinato del Río de la Plata, era indudable. Su aprovechamiento comercial y agrícola estaba por determinar.
La Armada española, avanzadilla exploradora de las posesiones de Ultramar, estuvo siempre presente, a veces cediendo el protagonismo en aras del servicio, pero engrandeciendo el nombre de España, que en ese momento jugaba una partida estratégica en el tablero de África.

On October 1, 1777, the Treaty of San Ildefonso was signed and with it a new chapter began in the Spanish naval history. In the agreement, Portugal ceded the islands of Fernando Poo, Annobón, and both Elobeyes, as well as the coastline between the mouths of the Niger and Ogooué rivers.
The geostrategic interest of that enclave, which allowed a settlement in the eastern sector of the South Atlantic with an operational center in the viceroyalty of Rio de la Plata, was beyond any doubt. Its commercial and agricultural use was to be determined.
The Spanish Navy, an outpost explorer of overseas possessions, was always present, even though at times giving up the limelight for the sake of common good, but enhancing the name of Spain, which at that time was gaining prominence in Africa.
