  • Resumen
    • In Abruzzo, in the Church of San Nicola di Bari in Prata d'Ansidonia, there is an ambo that is hard to interpret, although well known in the artistic panorama of southern Italy. It has awakened the interest of several scholars, who have been concerned mainly to describe its formal and decorative elements. The present paper, situating this liturgical installation in the light of a local tradition of church furnishings, provides an analysis of its iconographic and iconological features. It also makes a suggestion as to where the ambo may have stood in its original location, namely the Church of San Paolo ad Peltuinum, and discusses its contextualization within the sacred space. Lastly, it sets the ambo in the scene of te diocese of Sulmona-Valva. By reconstructing the complex historical events of the diocese, it becomes possible to shed light on its unusual patronage, an aspect that has not been dealt with in depth until now.
