  • Martyrdom, irrespective of gender identity, was a vehicle to contest such aggregation of authority. The text is silent on any conjugal relationships, and all our readings here are conjectural and do not resolve innumerable problems, e.g., the presence of a child and the father's assumption of ownership. Augustine seeks to limit their autonomous authority as women, referring to them as in sexu infirmiore, pointing out that though physically female, inheritors of Eve's fallen nature and frail, they were able to exhibit masculine bravery.
