Cuidando la familia del moribundo en ámbitos no especializados en cuidados paliativos: “arropar”

    CONTEXTO: El final de la vida de una persona supone una experiencia intensa para todo el núcleo familiar. La muerte no siempre acontece en unidades de cuidados paliativos, donde la familia es un pilar asistencial. Entonces, ¿qué ocurre en las unidades no especializadas? ¿Está la familia incluida en los cuidados que las enfermeras ofrecen a la persona en fin de vida? OBJETIVO: El objetivo de este estudio es explorar y comprender los cuidados a la familia del moribundo desde la vivencia enfermera en ámbitos no paliativos.

    MÉTODO: Estudio cualitativo basado en la Teoría Fundamentada, realizado en Tarragona (España). La recogida de datos se realizó mediante entrevista en profundidad a 13 enfermeras, no especializadas en cuidados paliativos, pertenecientes a los ámbitos asistenciales donde la muerte es frecuente.

    RESULTADOS: Emergen dos categorías centrales: Familia Cuidadora y Familia Cuidada. Cada una de ellas se estructura en diversas subcategorías que recogen los elementos del complejo cuidado que las enfermeras ofrecen.

    CONCLUSIONES: La familia constituye un importante eje de cuidados enfermeros desde dos perspectivas: como cuidadores proactivos de la persona en fin de vida y como receptores de cuidados ante una experiencia de gran contenido psicoemocional.

    BACKGROUND: The end of a person’s life is an intense experience for the whole family. Death does not always occur in palliative care units, where the family is a welfare pillar. So, what happens in non-specialized units? is the family included in the care that nurses offer to the person at the end of life? AIM: The objective of this study is to explore and understand the care of the dying family from the experience of nursing in non-palliative settings.

    METHOD: Qualitative study based on the Grounded Theory carried out in the Tarragona (Spain). Data collection was carried out by means of an in-depth interview with 13 nurses, not specialized in palliative care, belonging to areas where death is frequent.

    RESULTS: Two central categories appear: Family Caregivers and Family Care. Each of them is structured in subcategories that include the elements of the complex care that nurses offer.

    CONCLUSIONS: The family constitutes an important axis of nursing care from two perspectives: as proactive caregivers of the person at the end of life and as a care objective in the face of a strong psycho-emotional experience.
