Resumen de La Educación sanitaria en los diabéticos: ¿Es necesario un cambio de enfoque?

La diabetes es una de las enfermedades crónicas que necesita más colaboración por parte del paciente y muchas veces también de su familia o cuidadores. El asegurar y proporcionar capacidades que les ayuden para afrontar situaciones que les lleve a una buena adaptación a la enfermedad, es una tarea en la que se trabaja desde diferentes ámbitos. Tradicionalmente la ayuda en esta capacitación, por parte del personal sanitario, ha estado centrada en dar información, aunque sin desmerecer ésta, son los elementos de índole emocional y conductual los que más determinan las actitudes estables que llevan a un cambio adecuado de hábitos. Sólo podremos trabajar en este campo partiendo de las necesidades sentidas por el paciente.
Con el objetivo de comprender mejor la realidad del diabético, describo una entrevista en profundidad a Ana, diabética desde los dos años, hecho que me ha permitido conocer más de cerca la realidad de sus vivencias con la enfermedad y reflexionar sobre las necesidades y expectativas que sobre los sanitarios tienen los pacientes.

Diabetes is one of the chronic diseases that needs more collaboration from the patient and many times also from the family caretaker. To assure and provide abilities that help them to cope with situations in order to have a good adaptation to the illness is a task performed from many fields. Traditionaly, help in this training from the medical personal has been centred in giving information. Nevertheless, without undermining the value of the information, the elements that really determine stable attitudes that lead to an appropriate change of habits are those of an emotional and behavioural nature. We can only work in this field starting from the needs felt by the patient.
With the aim of better understanding the reality of the diabetic patient, I describe an in depth interview with Ana, who is diabetic since she was two years old. This fact has helped me to know more closely the reality of her experiences with the illness and to reflect on the needs and expectations that patients have about health workers.
