    Em Apocalipse 14,1-5 João descreve os seguidores de Jesus sob o símbolo dos 144.000. Nessa descrição ele usa a linguagem de pureza para contrastá-los com os seguidores da Besta e adoradores da sua imagem. Em 4,4 eles são descritos como “os que não se contaminaram com mulheres, porque são virgens”. Essas palavras são consideradas enigmáticas e estão entre as de mais difícil elucidação em todo o livro do Apocalipse. Esse estudo é uma análise exegética dessa passagem, que utiliza o método Close Reading, a fim de elucidar o significado da pureza sexual dos 144.000. A análise do contexto literário e linguístico, bem como da estrutura da passagem e dos temas e palavras nela presentes sugerem que João usou essa linguagem para enfatizar o tema da pureza moral e espiritual que os seguidores de Jesus devem desenvolver no tempo fim.

    In Revelation 14,1-5 John describes the followers of Jesus under the symbol of the 144,000. In this description, he uses the purity language to contrast them with the followers of the Beast and worshipers of his image. In 4,4, they are described as “those who did not defile themselves with women, for they remained virgins”. These words are considered puzzling and are among the most difficult to elucidate throughout the Book of Revelation. This study is an exegetical analysis of this passage, which uses the Close Reading method to elucidate the meaning of the 144,000 sexual purity. The analysis of the literaryand linguistic context as well as the structure of the passage and the themes and words present in it suggest that John used this language to emphasize the theme of the moral and spiritual purity that the followers of Jesus must develop in the end time.
