A experiência transatlântica: romances que viajam, viajantes que escrevem romances

    The European book market began to organize itself internationally around the year 1480, expanding overseas thanks to the process of globalization promoted by the countries of the Iberian Peninsula. The collection of the Grêmio Literário Português, a circulating library set up in 1867 in the capital of the province of Pará, was a tributary of this process of expansion of the transatlantic book trade. A significant part of the collection of this circulating library, located in the far north of Brazil, was made up of French novels published in the 19th century. A portion of these novels were written by travellers who took their experience outside the European continent as their motto for writing their works. This article explores the biographical trajectory of these authors and then discusses the problem of the formal and thematic dialogue established between travel narratives and fiction, in view of the dispute between these genres for the publishing market of the Eight hundred. Finally, it raises questions about the role of both in the constitution of European consciousness about unknown peoples from other continents, as well as in the imaginary of the then colonized countries.

    Este artigo parte da problemática do transporte dos livros na Europa Ocidental para discuti-la no contexto transatlântico das rotas estabelecidas entre a Europa e a região Norte do Brasil no século XIX. Demonstra que a circulação do livro europeu em território paraense foi garantida por mudanças importantes na legislação de navegação de cabotagem brasileira, que suscitaram a criação de rotas transatlânticas ligando os portos de Liverpool, Havre, Porto e Lisboa a Belém do Pará. Graças a essas rotas, o Grêmio Literário Português, instalado em 1867 na capital da província do Pará, recebeu quantidade significativa de romances franceses. Parcela desses romances resultaram da experiência de seus autores em territórios colonizados por países europeus. Tenho isto em vista, parte da biografia desses autores franceses para para discutir o intenso diálogo entre relatos de viagem e a ficção e a disputa de ambos por um público leitor ávido por notícias de territórios desconhecidos.
