  Quando Guglielmo il conquistatore introdusse il modello di foresta reale in inghilterra il suo scopo era proteggere i cervi destinati alla sua caccia. Per questa ragione l’applicazione della foresta fu arbitaria, crudele ed ingiusta. concessa il 6 novembre del 1217, la carta della Foresta promise due grandi cambiamenti. in primo luogo, codificò le leggi della foresta e ne mitigò la severità.

  in secondo luogo, elemento di grande importanza, disforestò tutte le terre che enrico ii e i suoi figli avevano afforestato.

  ad amministrare la legge della foresta furono chiamati ufficiali e un sistema di corti speciali, ossia attachment courts, inquistions e la forest eyre, una corte itinerante, collacata al vertice di questo apparato. ovviamente la tensione tra le limitazioni imposte dalla forest law e il naturale desiderio di trarre il massimo profitto dallo sfruttamento delle terre comprese nelle foreste reali fu più acuta per i proprietari che si trovavano in questa situazione.

  When William the conqueror introduced the continental model of a royal forest to england, his purpose was to protect the deer for his own hunting. For this reason, the forest law was characterized by arbitrary, cruel and unjust practices. issued on november 6, 1217, the charter of the Forest promised two major concessions. Firstly it codified the forest laws and mitigated their harshness. secondly, and more significantly, the charter disafforested all lands annexed by Henry ii and his sons. the organization which lay behind the enforcement of forest law consisted of officiers and of special courts, that is attachment courts, inquisitions ant the forest eyre which was the ultimate court. of course, the tension that existed between the limitations imposed by royal forest law and the natural desire to make maximum use of the lands that lay within royal forests was much greater for landholders other than the king who found themselves in this predicament.
