La exclusión social que muchas personas tienen por su etnia, grupo o enfermedad es fiel reflejo, en ocasiones, de la que recibe en los centros sanitarios. Bajo la etiqueta que ponemos al paciente se esconden prejuicios y estereotipos que condicionan nuestros cuidados en cantidad y calidad. El trato individualizado y personalizado de los pacientes exige que seamos capaces de ver a la persona tal y como es, para ello es imprescindible que empleemos herramientas como son la escucha y empatía activa. Solo así comprenderemos la persona a la que prestamos cuidados y por consiguiente éstos serán los más adecuados

The social exclusion that many patients suffer because of their race, social group or illness is sometimes a true reflection to the exclusion they receive in hospitals. When we label a patient, we hide some prejudices and stereotypes that determine our attention in quantity and quality. Because of the patients´ personalized attention, we are demanded to be able to find out the real person we are dealing with and, in order to achieve this aim, it is essential to listen to him and to use an active empathy. Only if we work in this way, we will understand the person we are looking after and, consequently, we will know the best treatment
