This study aimed to verify the intraocular pressure variation (IOP) on the exercise of bench press realized in positions such as straight, inclined and declined. Eight healthy individuals were evaluated during three sessions of resistance exercise on bench press with volume and intensity of 3 sets of 15 repetitions with 60% 1 RM. The interval time between sets was 60 seconds and moderate speed, according to the following positions: P1) bench press performed in straight position (0°); P2) bench press performed in inclined position (45°); P3) bench press performed in the declined position (-30°). The intraocular pressure was determined by using a Perkins’ tonometer in three distinct moments, as follows: M1) immediately before the exercise; M2) immediately after of the third repetition; M3) three minutes after the end of the third repetition. Statistical analysis was performed using the Shapiro-Wilk normality test and it ANOVA was also used with Bonferroni post-test adopting a significance level of 5%. The software used was GraphPad Prism®. The results showed the hypotensive effect of exercise in IOP, it was noticeable a significant reduction in IOP after exercising in the bench press independently of the chosen body position and also an average reduction after the completion of the exercise - approximately 3-4 mmHg or 25%. It was concluded that even in potentially hypertensive position, the exercise caused a significant reduction of the IOP. One can attribute the drop in IOP due to the resistance exercise, the mechanisms related to the reduced production of aqueous humor in contrast to the increase flow of this liquid by camerular sinus.

ABSTRACTVariation of intraocular pressure in bench press exercise performed in different positionsThis study aimed to verify the intraocular pressure variation (IOP) on the exercise of bench press realized in positions such as straight, inclined and declined.
