Resumen de Poder modelado en arcilla: Arte y política en la sociedad Tolita (Ecuador, 600 a.C. - 400 d.C.)

  Las representaciones artísticas producidas por la cultura Tolita hace alrededor de dos mil años en la costa ecuatoriana llaman la atención hasta nuestros días, y dejan ver aún al observador occidental no iniciado en arqueología precolombina, una notable carga simbólica. Desde una perspectiva estética, se ha exaltado la complejidad de algunas de sus composiciones, y fotografías de sus famosas producciones de orfebrería, que combinan finamente oro, platino y piedras preciosas, han dado la vuelta al mundo; sus producciones en cerámica y metal han protagonizado importantes exhibiciones en varios países. Pero poco se ha dicho sobre las posibles funciones de estas representaciones artísticas al interior de la sociedad que las fabricó. En este artículo, se presentan algunas reflexiones al respecto, que permiten proponer que el arte en esta cultura precolombina sirvió, ante todo, como una herramienta de poder al servicio de una elite emergente que, a través de ella, imponía su ideología y legitimaba su posición privilegiada dentro de una sociedad estratificada.

  The artistic representations produced by the Tolita culture about two thousand years ago on the Ecuadorian coast continue to receive attention to this day, both for their aesthetic value and their symbolism. The complexity of some of these compositions has been extolled, and photographs of some of its famous productions in metal, which finely combine gold, platinum and precious stones in exquisite compositions, have made their way around the world. However, little has been said about the possible functions of these artistic representations within the society that fabricated them. In this article, some reflections are presented supporting the proposal that the art in this pre-Columbian culture served, above all, as a tool of power at the service of emerging elites that, through its control, imposed their ideology and legitimated their privileged position within a stratified society.
