Este artículo tiene como fi n analizar la protección jurídica, civil y religiosa brindada a los negros y mulatos libres menores de edad en la Ciudad de México duran-te los siglos XVI y XVII. Tal protección contempló un doble objetivo: proteger su vida y sus derechos, y brindarles los recursos suficientes para su integración como individuos productivos y útiles a la sociedad, así como dignos fi eles de la Iglesia, en función de la reproducción y conservación de la institución familiar establecida por la legislación indiana y el derecho canónico. This paper aims to analyze the legal, civil and religious protection offered to the free black and mulatto minors in colonial Mexico City during the 16th and 17th centuries. Such protection considered a double objective: to protect their lives and rights, and to provide enough resources for their integration into society as productive and use-ful individuals, as well as faithful members of the Church, based on the reproduction and conservation of the family institution established by the Indian leg-islation and Canon Law.
