This article reviews the evolution of the processes of cultural and communicative globalization which took place in Catalonia during the 20th century while pointing out some of the trends which could arrive in the near future. Globalization has been a ¿natural¿ consequence of industrialization, the development of a culture of consumption and the growing Catalan (and Spanish) integration into the international markets and the technological, cultural and communication industries, at the heart of which lie, no doubt, the great transnational North Atlantic corporations which have deliberately promoted this globalization. The studies carried out up to now in Catalonia, both those of a historical character and those of a structural (economic or political) one, have not given full weight to this growing tendency towards globalization which has been occurring for more than a century, as they have been too focused on decrying the media power of the State or lamenting the hegemony of Castillian Spanish.
