This article is based on the analysis of the principal economic characteristics of the cultural industries at a moment of rapid transformation of the technologies surrounding them, of their formats of consumption and commercialisation, and of the globalisation of the most dynamic cultural markets. After a review of the general panorama in the West, this study examines the consequences of the features of Catalan production and the Catalan cultural market, a cultural and economic sphere of limited size, traditionally dependent on the Spanish commercial and communications sector. After evaluating the commercial and governmental strategies in this field, this paper concludes with some reflections on the future challenges and opportunities of the Catalan cultural industries.
