The relationship between the human settlements and their surrounding area is crucial to broadly understand ancient societies. Through the results obtained by the Project of Research and Diffusion of the Zamora Protohistoric Archaeological Heritage in the site of Peñas de la Cerca Hillfort and in the remains of the Late Roman town of El Castillón, both of them in the province of Zamora, it is presented from different perspectives the connection among territories, strategic resources and settlements. It is described as a complex system of links working both in an internal and external level making more dynamic the exchanges with other external but near territories. The analysis of raw materials, their origin and specific uses, the visual control of the close territories, the direct access to the riversides, the valleys and the fords are variables to be considered to place the settlements in a central position in the net of social, hierarchical and commercial connections which they belong to. That event can be showed from the Iron Age to the Late Roman period.
