La narrativa de Fernández Flórez recoge en su espejo costumbrista aspectos muy significativos de nuestra sociedad, ofreciendo toda una completa retórica narrativa del desengaño, la ironía, la parodia y el humor. No carece, por tanto, Wenceslao de interés social, político, intelectual, ni tampoco, estrictamente literario y narrativo, pese a que la primera recepción de su obra fue injusta y perjudicó la cabal incorporación de Fernández Flórez al curso historiado de nuestras letras. Cabe plantearse ahora, por tanto, el porqué de este fracaso.

Fernández Flórez’s fiction collects very significant aspects of our society in its costumbrist mirror, offering a complete narrative rhetoric of disillusion, irony, parody and humour. Therefore, Wenceslao does not lack social, politician or intellectual interest, neither strictly literary and narrative interest despite the fact that the first reception of his work was unfair and damaged the fair incorporation of Fernández Flórez to the history of our literature. We must now consider the reason for this failure.
