En las primeras décadas del siglo XX los grandes centros metropolitanos occidentales conocerán una expansión sin precedentes que causará una perplejidad y desorientación igualmente inéditas hasta entonces. Y es en este momento histórico en el que surge toda una serie de filmes documentales de temática urbana que se lanzarán a captar la vida urbana y pondrán en evidencia la posición axial de la gran ciudad en el clima intelectual y artístico del momento. Estos filmes, que la crítica posterior reunirá bajo el epígrafe de sinfonías urbanas, representan la necesidad de preservar un tiempo histórico que se antojaba lineal e irrecuperable. Todas ellas tenían un objetivo fundamental: el desciframiento de lo visual en las calles de las grandes metrópolis, una nueva perspectiva que albergaba el sueño de la redención de la mirada.

In the first decades of the twentieth century the major Western metropolitan cities developed very quickly, and this unprecedented expansion would cause perplexity and disorientation. In this historical moment, a series of documentary films on urban themes appeared, films that sought to capture urban life, highlighting the axial position of the great city in the intellectual and artistic climate of the time. These films, grouped by cinema critics as “citysymphonies”, represent the urge to preserve a time that seemed irretrievable. All of them had a main goal: the deciphering of the visible on the streets of the great metropolis, a new perspective that harbored the dream of the redemption of the gaze.
