    Este artículo realiza un estudio histórico del concepto de las matemáticas como ciencia, hasta llegar a su concepción moderna. Presenta la íntima relación que actualmente existe entre la matemática y la computadora, no solamente para hacer matemáticas, sino como instrumento de enseñanza de éstas. Especial atención se hace al impacto que la computadora tiene en la enseñanza de las matemáticas a los ingenieros. Como conclusión general, se destaca el hecho que es necesario cambiar radicalmente la forma como actualmente se enseña la matemática, desde el nivel escolar hasta el universitario, con la ayuda de recursos computacionales. Se hace mención de las habilidades no técnicas que los futuros ingenieros adquieren con el uso de las computadoras.

    This paper makes a study of the historical development of the mathematics concept, for arriving to its modern conception. It presents the intimate relation that exists today between mathematics and the computer, not only for doing mathematics, as well as a tool for mathematics teaching. Special attention is made to the impact that the computer has on teaching mathematics to engineers. As a general conclusion, the fact that is necessary to change, in a radical way, the manner on how we teach mathematics, from elementary school to university level with the aid of computational resources is emphasized. Specials comments about the nontechnical skills that the engineers acquire with the use of the computers are made.
