La transformación de la economía romana y la difusión de la esclavitud, tras la II Guerra Púnica, ha sido uno de los temas que ha atraído en mayor medida a la historiografía moderna. pero la idea de que la expansión imperial provoca importantes cambios en la estructura económica, social y política no sólo es un producto de la historiografía reciente, sino también de la clásica. Los antiguos no sólo mostraron preocupación por estas transformaciones sino que también las interpretaron a partir de una serie de conceptos y estructuras discursivas que han jugado un papel fundamental en la construcción de la interpretación historiográfica moderna.

The transformation of the Roman economy and the diffusion of slavery after the 2nd Punic War has been one of the most attravtive subjets for modern historiography. But the idea that imperial expansion provockes important changes in the economic, social, and political structure is not only a product of the modern historiography, but also of classical historiography. The ancients not only worried about these transformations but they interpreted them from a number of concepts and discursive structures which played a fundamental role in the construction of the modern historiographical interpretation.
