The purpose of this reflection is to examine the role attributed in modern criticism to ROman stoicism about the supposed or real changes in the relationship of the free to slavery and slaves. By following the different stages of the formation of Roman Stoicism, one can actually grasp concrete legal and moral developments in the talking into account of slavery as a social rather than a natural fact. From this postulate will result pragmatic approaches which, while leading to a humanization of the slaves, do not condemn the institution of slavery itself.

L'objetif de cette réflexion est de s'interoger sur le rôle que l'on a attribué dans la critique moderne au stoïcisme romain à propos des changements supposés ou réels du rapport des libres à l'esclavage et aux esclaves. En suivant les différentes étapes de la fromation du stoïcisme romain, on peut effectivement saisir des évolutions conrètes, juridiques et morales, découler des approaches pragmatiques qui, si elles conduisent à une humanisation des esclaves, ne condamnet pas l'institution esclavagist en soi.
