Franco tried to transform the University into an ideological stronghold, mainly through compulsory union affiliation and the brutal supression of any Republican traces that were left and which, in the case of the University of Barcelona, included its autonomy and its Catalan identity. Nevertheless, as time went by, the University as a whole evolved into a focus of disaffection, as a result of the offspring of both sides’s rubbing shoulders together in it, of the diversification of ideological influences, and of its overcrowding. Dissension would eventually bring about the dissolution of the official students union and the confirmation of the student movement as a focus of destabilization for both academic life and the régime itself. The increasingly frequent «disturbances of the academic order» would become a problem for the Francoist authorities, showing the dictatorship’s limitations in the control and framing of the new generations, but the student movement did not have enough strength to build and consolidate an alternative model.
