Resumen de L'aparició i consolidació del gin dins la industria licorera de Menorca: una visió evolutiva (1717-1985)

  S’analitza el desplegament de la indústria licorera de Menorca i, especialment, l’aparició i la consolidació de la destil·lació de ginebra. Es destaca com, a partir d’una tradició aiguardentera no gaire remarcable, a l’entrada del segle xix s’inicia la fabricació d’espirituosos de tota mena, entre els quals ja s’esmenta un anomenat gin. S’examina el procés que possibilità al llarg d’aquell segle l’afermament d’aquesta activitat, que les darreres dècades ja és prou madura per produir licors premiats internacionalment i desenvolupar el gin modern. Finalment, s’estudien els canvis en el mercat que van menar que durant el segle xx el gin esdevingués la beguda pròpia de l’illa amb bona sortida comercial.

  We analyse the development of the spirits industry in Minorca and, particularly, the emergence and consolidation of the distillation of gin. We emphasize how, evolving from a not particularly brilliant tradition of making brandy, the distillation of all kind of liquors started at the beginning of nineteenth century, among which there is mention of one called “gin”. We study the process which, in the course of the century, led to the consolidation of this activity, which in the last decades had reached the maturity to produce liquors that received awards at international exhibitions and to develop the present-day version of the native gin. Finally we look at the market changes that allowed gin, in the twentieth century, to become a commercial success and the island’s trade-mark drink.
