The high rate of students who finish school without adequate reading skills is a major problem in our education system, with very stable percentages in the last 30 years, although in other countries they have been reduced significantly in the last decade.
Considering the importance of addressing this issue from a preventive perspective, we have reviewed some of the current bibliography that analyze initiation into reading.
We have found that, compared to the old model of preparation for reading, the current paradigm of emergent literacy emphasizes the evolutionary continuity of initial reading learning with a series of cognitive and linguistic skills developed in meaningful social interactions with the written words during preschool. These skills significantly modulate the effect of any method of teaching of reading, determining the subsequent success or failure in it.
Noticing that there is an incomplete knowledge, but very relevant, about skills and knowledge of emergent literacy, we conclude that they must be subject to systematic treatment in the second cycle of Preschool Education (EI) and promoting them must be a priority for Inspection in their functions of supervision and counseling schools regarding reading skills.
