El dolor cervical es una de las causas más frecuentes de discapacidad. Para realizar una correcta aproximación diagnóstica es importante distinguir el origen del dolor, ya sea de tipo neuropático, no neuropático o mecánico. El médico deberá prestar especial atención a los signos de alarma más frecuentes, indicativos de procesos de mayor gravedad y, junto con una historia clínica dirigida y una exploración física, solicitar las pruebas de imagen y electrodiagnóstico más adecuadas en base a la sospecha clínica y a la evolución del proceso, sin olvidar que tienen una utilidad variable, especialmente en procesos crónicos y/o degenerativos.

Neck pain is one of the most frequent causes of disability. For a correct diagnostic approach, it is important to identify the source of pain, whether mechanical, non-neuropathic or neuropathic. The physician has to pay special attention to the most frequent signs of alarm, indicative of more serious processes, and take a targeted medical history and carry out a physical examination; most importantly, the most appropriate imaging and electrodiagnostic testing has to be ordered based on clinical suspicion and the evolution of the process, without forgetting that they are of variable usefulness, especially in chronic and/or degenerative processes.
