Hasta la fecha, se conocían tres traducciones de Shakespeare realizadas por León Felipe, las de Noche de Reyes, Macbeth y Otelo, así como el prólogo de una cuarta, su adaptación cinematográfica de El rey Lear. Diversas fuentes cercanas al poeta habían asegurado que esta adaptación cinematográfica y una quinta traducción, de Hamlet, habían sido destruidas por el poeta a la muerte de su esposa. Se dudó incluso de que hubieran jamás existido. El presente trabajo da cuenta del reciente hallazgo de (parte de) la traducción de Hamlet de León Felipe, en forma de manuscrito, y presenta los primeros datos que ha arrojado el estudio del texto: más de seiscientas líneas (verso y prosa) de la tragedia de Shakespeare en nueva versión castellana, así como un índice completo. También recoge los criterios que han regido la primera edición del texto, y da a conocer la existencia de dos escritos inéditos del poeta sobre Shakespeare.

To date, three translations by León Felipe of Shakespeare’s works were known, namely, his translations of Twelfth Night, Macbeth and Othello, as well as the prologue to a fourth one, his film adaptation of King Lear. Several sources that were close to the poet had stated that this adaptation and a fifth translation, of Hamlet, had been destroyed by the poet at the time of his wife’s death. Their existence was even questioned. This paper reports the recent discovery of (part of) León Felipe’s translation of Hamlet, in manuscript form, and presents the first results of the study of the text. This offers more than six hundred lines (verse and prose) of Shakespeare’s tragedy in what is a new Spanish version, as well as a full table of contents. The paper also discuss about the criteria that have governed the first edition of the text, and reveals the existence of two unpublished texts by the poet about Shakespeare.
