Hoy sabemos que la totalidad de la materia que nos rodea, incluidos nosotros mismos, está constituida por átomos. En general, los átomos no existen libres sino que están ligados formando moléculas. De esta manera se obtiene la rica variedad de materiales distintos que observamos en la naturaleza. Mientras que los químicos se ocupan de la unión de los distintos átomos para formar moléculas hoy en día los físicos se ocupan de la construcción de los átomos y de las partículas de las que a su vez aquellos están constituidos.

Nowadays, we knor that the totality of the matter that surrounds us, including ourselves, is constituted by atoms. In general, there are no free atoms but linked forming molecules. In this way, it is obtain a rich variety of different materials that we see in the nature. While, chemists care about the unity of different atoms, nowadays physics care about of the construction of atoms and the particles of the ones already constituted
