    The birth of a journal is always a collective intellectual adventure, and that of Romantisme was one such. The period was one for vigorous exchange rather than consensus. But that vigour testified to a passion for ideas and to personal investment in the directions to give research and in the choices to make regarding the methods of textual analysis. If Romantisme managed to gather under its banner frequently antagonistic critical positions, it was because of its initial plea for a diverse and contradictory romanticism, nourished by conflicts that could only settle in motion, balanced through the play of its oppositions. Such a romanticism needed insolence and daring, differences rather than deference; insufficient attention paid to distortions, to clashes, to contradictions, could only have frozen it, impoverished it, skewed it

    La naissance d’une revue est toujours une aventure intellectuelle collective, et celle de Romantisme en fut une. Les temps étaient alors plus aux échanges vifs qu’au consensus. Mais cette vivacité témoignait d’une passion pour les idées et d’une implication personnelle dans les orientations à donner à la recherche et dans le choix des méthodes d’analyse des textes. Si Romantisme réussit à rallier à son projet des positions critiques souvent antagonistes, c’est grâce à son éloquent plaidoyer inaugural en faveur d’un romantisme divers, contradictoire, nourri de conflits qui ne trouvent assise que dans le mouvant, équilibré que par un jeu d’oppositions. Un tel romantisme avait besoin d’impertinences et d’audaces, d’écarts plus que d’égards ; une insuffisante attention aux distorsions, aux heurts, aux contradictions ne (pouvant) que (le) figer, (l’) appauvrir, (le) dénaturer
